In 2008, under the leadership of the Liberal Democrats, Liverpool was voted the worst performing council in the UK. Inspectors said the council’s use of cash resources was the worst in the country.
In 2010, Liverpool Labour took control of the council and got to work on improving services and putting our city on the national, and international stage.
But in the same year as we took control of the council, the Lib Dems and Tories went into coalition and launched a devastating attack on our city. Since 2010, Liverpool has had 63% of its funding from Central Government cut, meaning we have had to make tough decisions. But despite the attacks from central Government, Liverpool Labour has delivered for our city.
- Despite the coalition government scrapping Labour’s scheme to rebuild 26 schools in our city, Liverpool Labour managed to deliver 17 new schools.
- We have delivered 8000 new homes
- We’ve created over 30,000 new jobs, and before Covid, our local economy was flourishing.
- We’ve showcased our city in the best possible ways, including the incredible giants, our music festivals, and of course, our sporting triumphs (Not that we can claim responsibility!)
We’ve protected vital frontline services:
- Our SureStart centres;
- Our libraries;
- Our leisure centres.
- And we’ve protected our parks, and for the first time in decades, created new greenspace in our city.
This past year has been tough for all of us, and our communities have been devastated by the cost of living crisis and the rising costs of fuel. But Liverpool Labour councillors have been at the forefront of our local community response.
- Working with residents and organisations to support our most vulnerable;
- Setting up food banks and food unions to help feed those who have lost their jobs or been severely impacted by reduced income;
- Delivering fresh meals to those in our community who have become increasingly isolated;
- Making sure children don’t go hungry during the half-term;
Our city has gone through a lot over the last decade, but we’re proud of our record. We are optimistic about our city’s future.
